Tomb of the Six by Richard Parry

Tomb of the Six (A Splintered Land Story)

Author: Richard Parry

5 out of 5 stars

Tresward Knights, Geneve, Israel, and Vertiline have been sent to the Briscook Timberland to help three other Knights who are tracking down a sinner, an evil magic user. Unfortunately, they find the Knights and a group of villagers dead, along with evidence of a necromancer. After arriving in the village of Getun, Israel and Vertiline go to talk to the mayor, who they believe has information about what is going on. They decide to leave Geneve, as the least experienced of the three, behind, but Geneve has her own plans to find the sinner.

This dark fantasy novella has a lot going for it. The characters were well-written, and I liked how the author was able to reveal information about characters through dialogue and context clues. The story follows Geneve, so we get to know her the most. She’s an intriguing character with multiple mentions of her having cheated at her trial to become a Knight. Her personality and her inexperience in comparison to her companions shows when she refuses to be left behind and goes off to do her own thing.

The descriptions weren’t very detailed, but they were enough to set the scene. The world-building was also good, although it would have been better and more complete if the story was longer. There were some things mentioned more in passing that intrigued me, which certainly helped to draw me into wanting to read more of the series.

Overall, this is an exciting book that I enjoyed reading. While there were a couple of things that could be improved, there’s nothing truly wrong with it, which is why I’m rating it 5 out of 5 stars.
