Killer Christmas (Emma Wild Mystery #1)
Author: Harper Lin
4 out of 5 stars
After breaking up with her boyfriends of four years, famous singer Emma Wild returns to her hometown for the holidays. While visiting her sister’s cafe, Emma meets a fan who then falls dead in front of her. Shocked by what she’s witnessed, Emma notices that the woman accidentally took her drink. Realizing someone wants her dead, Emma decides to investigate for herself. Will she solve the case before they try again? To complicate things further, Emma’s ex-boyfriend is the detective in charge of the case.
I was pulled into the story immediately. The first scene is very attention-grabbing. The mystery was good. There were some aspects that were obvious, but it still kept me guessing. And the identity of the killer, and their motive, surprised me.
The biggest negative was that the reactions of some of the characters seems a bit off. Emma’s sister has to close her cafe because of the death, and while we only have one conversation to go off of, she seems way too unbothered by the loss of income. Emma is also way too casual about breaking into the suspect’s apartment and has no hesitation about telling the detective in charge of the case.
Overall, this was a good cozy mystery. It did have some things that could be improved in regards to the characters, so I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. It you’re looking for a Christmas time mystery, then this is a good one to consider.
