Newly Wed and Slightly Dead (A Touch of Magic Mysteries #1)
Author: Danielle Garrett
4 out of 5 stars
After 3 years of hard work, Anastasia Winters finally earned a promotion to magical wedding planning. After her last wedding had a near disaster, she knows she’s on thin ice with her boss. The pressure is even worse because she’s in charge of the wedding of the century between a human and a vampire lord. Everything is going well until the rehearsal dinner where the groom’s mother is murdered and the bride is the main suspect. If she’s going to save the wedding, and her career, Ana is going to have to get involved in the investigation. Can she help the handsome lead investigator, Caleb McCord, catch the killer before the wedding is called off for good?
The story was well written and had a good mystery. The killer and their motive did surprise me, but it also made sense in hindsight. The author did a great job of putting my suspicions on someone else without being too obvious about it. Their were some humorous moments, and the pace was good.
I liked all of the main characters. Ana is ambitious, caring and relatable. She’s very close with her sister, and cares about her clients. And she’s nervous about beginning to date again after focusing on er career for years. Caleb is very good at his job. He’s able to keep his professional and personal life separate, so there are no issues between him and Ana when he asks her out.
There were some negatives though. There were some editing mistakes, not a lot, but some of them were obvious, like an extra word that shouldn’t have been there. Also, despite there being many scenes set in her condo, I was surprised to find out that Ana has a cat. Her cat is only mentioned twice in the entire book. It was just weird the cat wasn’t mentioned more, otherwise why bother giving her one at all. The final issue is that a few times information was repeated unnecessarily.
Overall, this was a good book. I liked the characters and the plot, and the negatives aren’t huge ones, so I’ve decided to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. If you like mysteries with supernatural creatures and magic, then give this one a read. If you’re not a fan of romance, then maybe skip it.
