Penny Nichols spends her life wandering from town to town trying to keep away from the Raven. Penny sees clues about the future, what she calls glimpses. The Raven symbol is an omen of death. When Penny sees the Raven on someone, she knows that person is going to die within 24 hours. She’s started a new job working at a store owned by the Rocklands. After a few weeks, she has become friendly with her boss, Janice Rockland. While they’re having coffee, Penny sees the Raven appear in Janice’s cup, and she is determined not to let him win this time. But as she tries to keep Janice safe, she starts to realize that Janice and her family have a lot of secrets and some might even be deadly.
Secrets are a big theme in this book. Not only does Penny have her secrets, but the Rocklands also have many family secrets. One message this book conveys is that you never know what someone is like behind closed doors.
I thought all of the characters were well written. Throughout the story there are hits that there is just something off about the Rocklands versus how they portray themselves to Penny. But they’re very subtle hints, so I didn’t know what what was wrong just that something was off. Between the suspicious family and Penny’s interesting ability, I was intrigued and wanted to know more.
I liked Penny. Her seeing clues and symbols and having to interpret them is a more unique ability than something like visions. And I like that even though she’s had issues in the past with trying to help people that are marked to die, and has even failed, she’s still willing to try again.
There were just a couple of minor issues. The main problem is that Penny just often doesn’t think things through and instead does things without a plan. She’s tried to help others who have been marked for death by the raven before, so I would have thought she’d know better than to go in without a plan.
However, this is a fairly minor issue, so I decided to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. Definitely give this book a try if you like mysteries with a supernatural element and psychics with more unique abilities.
