Mysterious Merchandise by Astoria Wright

Mysterious Merchandise (A Witch’s Thrift Shop Mystery #1)

Author: Astoria Wright

4 out of 5 stars

While trying to catch a cat to return it to it’s owner, Alice Adelcraft stumbles upon a dead body. While trying to figure out what to do, a new street suddenly appears in front of her. To her shock, she soon realizes that this really is a street hidden by magic users. She later finds a lamp and returns to the magical street, believing it may have been the victims. She then witnesses two trouble making kids she had met before being taken in for questioning about the murder. Not believing they could have been involved, she decides to start investigating herself, and she has to do it without revealing to anyone that she doesn’t have any magic.

I liked the variety of characters and personalities. There’s Ron the serious police officer, Celeste the friendly store owner, Vestra the flirty store clerk daydreaming about romance, Alice’s studious friend Eric, and the group of trouble making kids. Alice actually reminded me of Evie from the movie series The Mummy, particularly the first one. Alice is an awkward historian who has a bit of a temper. Her mother is of Egyptian heritage and her father English heritage.

Overall, the writing was good. There were some intriguing hints about the history of Alice’s family. And I liked the little narrator’s notes to the reader at the beginning and end. Their hints about the future definitely made me want to read more of this series.

The only negative was the editing. There were multiple, obvious mistakes that should have been caught. These included misspellings and missing punctuation.

All in all, I did really enjoy the book and plan to purchase the rest of the series. However, I am rating it 4 out of 5 stars due to the editing mistakes. If you like fantasy stories that have people trying to navigate through a new world, then you should give this book a read.

  1. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea
shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit
crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
