Chaos in the Countryside by Astoria Wright

Chaos in the Countryside (The Faerie Apothecary Cozy Mysteries prequel)

Author: Astoria Wright

3.5 out of 5 stars

In the small town of Moss Hill, fae folk and humans live together. One resident is Carissa Shea, a half-elf/half-human, who owns an apothecary. One morning, she receives a plant in the mail. Traveling with the plant is a sprite named Chaos. There’s also a letter warning Cari of danger coming to Moss Hill and that Chaos can help her. Cari doesn’t want to get involved, but events begin to unfold that may give her no choice.

Overall, I enjoyed this novella, and I liked the characters. I liked the setting of a small town on an island where faeries and humans live together. Although, the descriptions could have been better. I thought the plot was really interesting and well done. While I knew something was up with one of the characters, I got all of the pieces at the same time as Cari and put them all together with her.

There were some issues I had with Cari, although overall, I liked her. Due to her desire not to get involved, she was sometimes too passive in trying to find answers. Instead, the answers came to her.

Another problem was that there were timeline issues in the final chapters and things didn’t quite line up. Cari goes to work in the morning when she gets involved with trying to stop the fae causing the problems. After the fight, she thinks, “It’s already morning.” And that is just one of multiple timeline issues I noticed in the last chapters.

Due to the negatives I mentioned, I decided to give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. It’s definitely not a bad book. If the plot piques your interest, you should definitely give it a read.
