Jess has just been kicked off her high school cheer squad. She’s sitting in the bleachers watching them perform when an explosion kills the entire squad and the basketball team. Twenty years later, she’s a paranormal investigator on a popular ghost hunting show. It’s not until they’re at the airport that she finds out that they’re returning to her hometown and the site of the tragedy. Her team is able to convince her to go, but it quickly becomes a decision they regret. Will they all make it out alive?

This was a good novella. It was well written and fast paced. Honestly, I wasn’t surprised by way the story ended up unfolding, but there were a couple twists at the ends that did surprise me. And despite the short length, I was able to get a decent feel for the characters personalities.

Jess is a tough woman who doesn’t seem to hide her feelings, but it becomes apparent just how much she hides when she tells her team about witnessing her friends’ deaths in high school and how it has affected her. It also becomes obvious how much she cares about Mike, Billy, and Sam.

Along with Jess, there are three other characters: Mike, Jess’s boyfriend, Billy, and Samantha. I actually started out with a negative opinion about them because they had Jess at the airport before they told her where they were going and cajoled her into finally agreeing, especially Mike who does know about the deaths while Billy and Sam didn’t. But they did make up for it by being willing to leave immediately when they realize how much being there upsets Jess, and they had all grown on me by the end of the story.

I decided to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. There were some editing mistakes, like misspelled words. And I was annoyed at three of the characters for the first part of the book. Despite that, I did end up liking it. So if you like books about paranormal investigators in haunted buildings, then you should consider reading this one.

Happy Halloween!
