Something Witchy This Way Comes (The Victorian Witch Chronicles Book 1)
Author: Fiola Tempest
4.5 out of 5 stars
In Victorian Ireland, Tellehandra is raised by her father after he sends away her mother and aunts for being witches. Her father dies when she’s 15, and she goes to live with her uncle and cousins. Unfortunately, her uncle is a gambler who has lost most of his money and sees Tellehandra as a way to get more money, by either convincing her to marry his son or killing her. At the same time, she starts to notice that when she’s angry, she produces sparks of fire. Will she escape, and will she ever find her mother and learn more about her magic?
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I liked Tellehandra. She’s intelligent and has good instincts. Despite the time period, she’s willing to stand up for herself. The story is written in the first person, so it feels like she’s talking directly to the reader. The rest of the characters were also well written.
From Tellehandra’s sparks of fire and the glimpses that we get when she’s remembering her mother, I’m curious about how magic works in this series.
There were a few editing mistakes so I took away half a star to rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you like a mix of fantasy and mystery with historical elements, then you should give this book a try.
