Nimue: Freeing Merlin
Author: Ayn Cates Sullivan, PHD
4 out of 5 stars
When 17-year-old Nina and her mother travel to England for the summer, Nina has no idea what awaits her there. While out exploring the village they’re staying in, Nina meets a woman who claims to be Morgan le Fey, who tells Nina that she is the reincarnation of Nimue, the sorceress who trapped Merlin in a tree. To prove it to Nina, Morgan sends her into the past to relive her life.
Overall, I liked this book. The plot was interesting and mixed in elements of Celtic history, mythology, and Arthurian legends. The story isn’t action-packed. Instead, the majority of the book follows Nimue as she grows and matures into her destiny.
The writing was fine. There was some odd phrasing, and the story’s flow was also a bit off sometimes, but nothing that bothered me too much. And there were many nice nature descriptions. One small thing that bothered me was that Nina often changed what she called her mother, switching between mom, mother, and even her name a few times.
Another thing that bothered me in the beginning was that, besides her boyfriend Owen, Nina only makes one reference to her friends in the very beginning of the story. There is no mention of saying goodbye to them before leaving the country for the summer or contacting them in any way.
Despite the things that bothered me, I did enjoy reading this book, especially the parts that took place in the past, which I thought were better written, so I decided to rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
