Becoming Dawn Knight by Brigitta Moon

Becoming Dawn Knight (Dawn Knight Thriller Book 1)

Author: Brigitta Moon

2 out of 5 stars

Soon after graduation from college, Susie lands a job writing an advice column. Although not her dream job, Susie pushes through, until the day she receives a letter from a grieving mother, Anne, who wants Susie to write a book about her daughter, Shawn, who was murdered. Anne also hopes that Susie might manage to find out who really killed Shawn: the serial killer who was convicted or Shawn’s husband. With the assistance of her friend, Jamie, Susie sets out to try to get answers for Anne and write a successful book under the pseudonym, Dawn Knight.

I’ll start off by saying that the plot interested me immediately. There were some questions that were never answered, such as why Susie was chosen to do this by Anne. However, these little plot holes could be overlooked, especially with it being part of a series, so there might be revelations in other books that would explain things. The writing in the prologue was riveting and drew me into the story.

The pace felt off. It was fast, but because of the books shorter length, it felt like the author was trying to put too much into it, and there wasn’t enough of a buildup of the suspense that should have been there, especially when Susie went to interview Ian Little, Shawn’s probable killer who had confessed to murdering other women.

The main problem with the book, though, comes from the characterization. Susie does very little of her own research into Shawn’s murder and the case against Ian Little, which really annoyed me because this is a big opportunity for her. And in general, most of the characters felt a bit one dimensional instead of being fully fleshed out.

With all the negatives I mentioned, I decided to rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. I just didn’t connect with Susie, and at the end of the book, had very little interest in continuing the series.
