Trolling for Trouble by Olivia Hardin

Trolling for Trouble (The Lynlee Lincoln Series #1)

Author: Olivia Hardin

4.5 out of 5 stars

It’s Halloween and Lynlee Lincoln, a witch who works as a Neutralizer, isn’t surprises that it’s been a busy night. Her job is to help her charges and make sure the supernatural world stays hidden. When she finally gets home, her hopes to get some sleep are dashed when her ex-boyfriend Beck and his two children arrive in desperate need of her help. Will Lynlee be able to help them with the creature that drove them from their home years before and why Beck’s daughter is ill?

While Lynlee helps Beck and his children, Lynlee’s best friend Rhiannon, a werewolf vampire hybrid and doctor, has also had a busy Halloween night. Her biggest patient of the night is a child vampire who’s been bitten by a werewolf to create a hybrid. Rhiannon has to get a difficult to obtain ingredient for a serum that might just stop the transformation. Will she succeed?

This book also includes a second story about Beck and Lynlee’s first meeting and the beginning of their relationship. There is a sex scene in this one.

Overall, the writing was solid. There was a good amount of action. And there was some basic world-building about the magical creatures and Lynlee’s job as a Neutralizer.

The only negative for me was some of the characterization elements. I thought Lynlee was great. She comes across as a determined, serious, and competent witch and neutralizer. But Rhiannon, while being just as good at her job and takes her job seriously, has a more immature personality when she isn’t focused on her patients, which kind of annoyed me. There was nothing particularly wrong with Beck. However, we never see his perspective and don’t know his thoughts about things. The reader learns he broke up with Lynlee after finding out she’s a witch, and he still seems to be uncomfortable with it, but he also flirts with her. So some things are just conflicting, and it made me want to get a glimpse into what he’s thinking.

To be honest, the characters just didn’t click with me, so I’m not interested in reading more in the series. I do think it comes down to personal preference, and there isn’t anything truly wrong with this book, which is why I gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars. But if the plot and characters piqued your interest, then it’s definitely worth a read.
