Scraps of Paper (Spookie Town Murder Mysteries Book 1)
Author: Kathryn Meyer Griffith
4 out of 5 stars
After her husband’s death, Abigail Sutton decides to start fresh by moving to the small town of Spookie. She also hopes to fulfill her dream of being a freelance artist. She buys a small home and begins renovating it, but find notes on small pieces of paper. The notes were written by Jenny and Christopher Summers. Jenny, Christopher and their mother, Emily, disappeared 30 years previously. Everyone believed that they had simply left town, but the notes Abigail finds make her question that story.
Abigail also meets Frank, who is a former Chicago homicide detective who recently lost his wife. Together, they begin to investigate the mystery of what actually happened to Emily and her children. Did they family really leave town, or were they murdered? Will Abigail and Frank be able to find out?
Scraps of Paper by Kathryn Meyer Griffith is a well-written and riveting book. The mystery of what happened to the Summers family was very intriguing and had multiple layers. With careful reading, you can figure out most of the answers by chapter 15 (there are 19 chapters), but there was one part of the mystery that I couldn’t figure out until it was finally revealed. The story also has a theme of moving on after loss.
I loved the descriptive writing. It really set up a great atmosphere at the beginning of the story as Abigail arrives in Spookie. The characters are also really well written and interesting. And there are a variety of fun, quirky personalities.
The book’s only negatives is some topic-jumping in the dialogue, which sometimes caused an awkward flow. Also, the author overused commas and put them in places where they weren’t needed.
Despite those minor negatives, I think this is a wonderful mystery novel that I’m rating 4 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading the next book in this series.
