Crimes of Magic: The Witch’s Artifact (Crimes of Magic Book 1)
Author: Richard L. King
4 out of 5 stars
When P. I. Rachel Chase invites her friend, Robert Walker, to join her on a case, he thinks he knows what to expect. But neither he nor Rachel expect the simple case of suspected adultery to lead them to another case involving a stolen magical artifact. Although Rachel is hesitant to take on the job of locating the artifact, a murder occurs that changes her mind. Robert uses his own knowledge of magic to assist Rachel with the case, but will it be enough when they go up against experienced magic users?
I liked the story’s plot. I was intrigued and wondering what was so special about the artifact that was stolen. The setup of the magic in the story was interesting. Spells were compared to exploits in a computer system that can be used as long as you know the code that’s already been programmed into the universe.
The writing was good, overall. There were some humorous and lighthearted moments. The story was fast paced, and the characters were well written. However, the author sometimes included unnecessary details or dialogue. There were also some editing mistakes, mostly misplaced or missing quotations.
The story is told from the first person perspective of Robert, so we know more about his thoughts, feelings, and motivations. He’s intelligent but a bit awkward. He’s attracted to Rachel and is thrilled to have the chance to spend time with her. In contrast, while we don’t get Rachel’s perspective, she seems very confident. She’s good at her job and very professional.
I enjoyed this book. There are some things that need to be fixed and other things that could be better, as I mentioned, which is why I’m rating it 4 out of 5 stars. If you like crime and fantasy books, then you should check this one out.
