Grosvenor Lane Ghost (Paranormology Book 1)
Author: Jeremy Tyrrell
3.5 out of 5 stars
Taking place in Victorian London, Grosvenor Lane Ghost follows an unnamed narrator as he begins working as an assistant for the Professor (also unnamed). Written as the narrator’s memoirs, the story begins with him learning about how he will help the professor with his work: finding scientific proof of the existence of ghosts. The house on Grosvenor Lane is where they start.
Overall, this book was well-written. And the writing was very atmospheric during the scenes in the house as the narrator senses another presence. And I liked that they were styled as a memoir. It enabled the narrator to talk to the reader about the events he experienced and how they still affect him years later.
Now onto the characters. I did like the narrator. As I mentioned before, the story is from his first-person perspective. He was a very sympathetic character in the way he talked about his struggles with keeping a job because of his clumsiness. He’s determined, and a bit desperate, to keep his job with the Professor, which comes through in how closely he pays attention when learning from the Professor and how much effort he puts in.
As for the Professor, I just didn’t like him. He’s a passionate but stereotypical scientist. He often ignores and berates the narrator. Even when the narrator is trying to tell him something, the Professor just cuts him off. While some of the Professor’s actions end up having a reasonable explanation, and he apologizes for the others, it was too late to improve my opinion of him.
In general, there wasn’t anything about this book that captured my interest enough to make me want to read more in this series. Between that and my dislike for the Professor, I’m rating this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
