Fantasy Unbound
Authors: A. R. Lachance, Elizabeth-Rose Best, Ian Gough, Mae McKinnon, Kris Hawley
4.5 out of 5 stars
This anthology has 21 wonderful fantasy stories and covers multiple sub-genres, from dark fantasy to purely whimsical. This collection was written by five authors: A. R. Lachance, Elizabeth-Rose Best, Ian Gough, Mae McKinnon, and Kris Hawley. Most of the stories felt finished, but there were some that read like prologues to longer stories.
One of those that particularly caught my interest was about a gryphon finding an elf child that’s on their own. Knowing that elf children normally don’t leave elven cities, the gryphon wonders if something has happened and decides to take the child and go find out. This is one I’d love to read a continuation of, especially since it’s from the perspective of a gryphon.
I really liked these short stories and the different styles each author had. Ian Gough’s stories, which were very humorous, were my personal favorites. The only story I had any negative feelings about was one that had two dragons discussing eating different species and comparing what they taste like. It wasn’t super detailed, but it was detailed enough that, to me, it was a little gross. Also, while I didn’t notice any editing mistakes in the other stories, there was one that had multiple errors, including misspellings. Considering the rest of the stories were fine, I assume that one just got missed by the editor.
Like I said before, I really liked this book, and it definitely deserves 4.5 out of 5 stars. I also appreciate that links to each authors various social media and websites, as well as a short bio, were included at the back of the book.
