Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper (Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper Series Book 1)
Author: J. L. Bryan
5 out of 5 stars
Ellie Jordan is an experienced paranormal investigator. She’s also an annoyed one after her boss decides to hire Stacey Ray Tolbert, who recently graduated from college, to help with investigations and handle their cameras. Only a few weeks after Stacey’s hire, she and Ellie meet with the Treadwell family, who are experiencing paranormal activity in their old manor in Savannah, Georgia, including their young daughter seeing an apparition of a woman. After gathering evidence and seeing the spirit for herself, Ellie believes the woman is a territorial spirit, but she soon realizes this case isn’t as obvious or simple as she first thought.
If you like ghost hunting shows, then you’ll like this book. Everything Ellie and Stacey do in the beginning is what you would see on one of those shows: meeting the family and listening to their stories, setting up cameras, spending the night, and researching the house and the people that lived there.
Overall, the writing is fantastic. The descriptions often create a spooky atmosphere for various places Ellie and Stacey visit in the book, including the Treadwells’ home. The well-written descriptions of how Ellie is feeling at the locations also helps to make the reader feel a bit spooked.
I also liked the characters and found them realistic and well written. They are nicely fleshed out for the first book in a series. Even the side characters are well done. There is, also, a good mix of personalities. As the main characters, the reader gets to know Ellie and Stacey the best. Ellie’s experience shows in her commitment to finishing the case and helping her clients, and how she’s able to keep calm even when she is feeling scared. There are also intriguing hints about Ellie’s past and a bad encounter she had with a spirit as a teenager. Stacey is an obvious rookie, who is thrilled to finally see a real ghost haunting and doesn’t fully understand what she is in for, but the bravery she shows throughout the book makes her easily likable. Ellie and Stacey are compelling opposites, not only in their experience levels and attitudes, but also in the way the dress and the music they like.
The only negative is that the plot is a bit predictable. It started off as an intriguing mystery, but with only a few pieces of information, I was able to figure out most of what was going on. However, the writing and characters more than make up for the plot’s predictability.
With all of those positives, I happily rate Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading the next in this series, which is currently 20 books long. I recommend it to anyone, 14 and up, who likes a story containing ghosts.
