The First Case by Marie Tayse

The First Case (Colt Investigations #1)

Author: Marie Tayse

3.5 out of 5 stars

In 1961, William and Donna Colt move into their dream home in Lincoln, Nebraska and raise their five sons there. They often hear strange noises, but in 1988, the strange happenings in their home get worse, and William begins to act strangely. Eventually, the Colt family’s life in the house comes to a horrifying conclusion. Soon a new family moves into the home and also begin to experience odd events. The events that follow will give the five Colt brothers the determination to help others and lead to the creation of Colt Investigations.

There were plenty of spine-chilling moments in this paranormal story. Although the pace started a bit slow, it sped up in chapter 4 and kept a steady and quick pace for the rest of the book. The characters were well-written and believable.

The story did have a couple of issues. The biggest one, to me, was the unnecessarily, overly detailed descriptions. For example, one tense scene includes this sentence, “Hunter leaped from the cab of his red and white extended cab Dodge Ram pickup,” and these type of overly detailed descriptions often interrupted the pace and flow of the story for me. The author was also often overly specific about what months had gone by, like mentioning the brothers birthdays, which sometimes made me confused about the story’s timeline. The other problem is that there are some editing mistakes including comma mistakes and wrong verb tenses.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and so will anyone else who loves stories about paranormal hauntings. However, because of the problems I mentioned, I am rating it 3.5 out of 5 stars. As a warning, there are descriptions of murder, suicide, and abuse, so anyone uncomfortable with those topics should skip this book.
