Bloody Redemption by James Meenagh

Bloody Redemption (The Nick Parker Series Book 1)

Author: James Meenagh

4 out of 5 stars

After 10 years as an assassin for the US government, Nick Parker decided to become a cop to make up for the lives he’s taken. He starts his new career in Missoula, MT before joining the Washington Criminal Investigation Division in Seattle. After a high profile case ends in Parker shooting and killing a suspect before he can kill Parker’s partner, Parker is placed on leave while the investigation into the shooting is conducted. Parker heads into the Cascade Mountains to fish and relax.

At the same time, hikers have been going missing in the Cascade Mountains. When Parker’s fishing is interrupted by a woman in need of help, Parker will find himself embroiled in a deadly fight.

Before I get into the review, I want to warn about the descriptions of rape, murder and dismemberment, and child abuse. None of the rape scenes are graphic, and they focus more on how the victim is feeling. There are a couple of gorier murder scenes, but nothing overly detailed or descriptive.

Overall, this is a really good crime thriller. It is quite long with almost 750 pages. I did think that some things were a bit too drawn out with some unnecessary scenes, but generally, the story flowed easily and had a good pace. The point-of-view changed between multiple characters a lot, and the reader knows a lot about what’s going on before Parker does.

I liked all the characters’ personalities. And there was some diversity in race and ethnicities. Parker was a bit stereotypical as the former military man going into law enforcement to make up for what he was ordered to do, but I still liked him. He’s a well-written and compelling character.

I did feel that there was some awkward dialogue, and some scenes where the interactions between some of the characters felt a bit forced and awkward.

While there were a few things that I didn’t care for, I did enjoy this book. Therefore, I am rating it 4 out of 5 stars. This is a good choice if you’re looking for a longer crime thriller and like to really get to know the characters.
